Merlin is the first fantasy book I've read in a long time that reflects historical and cultural understanding comparable to that of Tolkein and Lewis. I've read medieval Arthurian legends extensively, and my thought during the first part of the book was, "Wow." A "wow" because Lawhead pulled off the combination of faithfulness to old legends /5().
